CES 2014 – “Playstation Now” Announced

I don’t like January. It’s cold (no seriously – We’re experiencing an Arctic Deep freeze up here) dreary, nothing much to look forward to but the small glimmer of awesome comes in the form of CES. A place for all us techno-junkies to drool over the latest, greatest and emerging technologies. Yesterday, a little piece of awesome was announced by Sony. Finally they have lifted some details on their Gaikai streaming service and it’s got a whole heck of a lot more meat to it than I had imagined for the launch.

“Playstation Now” is expected to launch in the summer (in the US) with a “Closed Beta” to take place this winter. The streaming service is going to be available across all current Playstation platforms and Sony TVs with future plans to launch on other platforms. Sony states that a 5Mbps internet connection is required for this service. No news on pricing or how it will all play out for users but I suspect it’s going to be similar to Netflix with an all you can eat monthly subscription model for older titles. I can’t see new games become a part of this service unless they make them available for say $5 per day of rental.

Anyway – that’s some pretty exciting news. What do you think?

PlayStation 2012 Holiday Event Video Report

JoystickUnicorn’s PlayStation Holiday Event 2012 – Toronto, Oct. 3, 2012

Because the idea of opening new video games on Christmas morning always filled me with a childhood sense of wonderment, let’s take a look at the Sony PlayStation 2012 Holiday Event through a child’s eyes…literally.

On Oct. 3 2012, Sony and many leading developers showcased new and upcoming PS3 game titles for the holiday season.  Paige and I made our way to the Palais Royale on Toronto’s Waterfront to see what we could expect from PlayStation over the holidays.

Paige was instinctively drawn to Skylanders Giants from Activision and Square Enix.  Out on Oct. 21st, Skylanders Giants lets you switch out your figures on the fly during gameplay as its the figures that store the individual stats.  More game modes have been added along with more advanced difficulty modes and a fun co-op.

LittleBigPlanet Karting available on the PS3 on Nov. 6th blends the kart racing we all know and love with the creativity typically found in games with LittleBigPlanet in the title.  We raced a few laps using the PS Move Steering wheel in this title from United Front Games and Media Molecule.

Paige with the Sony WonderbookThe Sony Wonderbook, set to be released in December was on display with their launch title, Book of Spells.  This interactive, AR experience is set prior to the events of the Harry Potter movies, but Paige loved seeing herself in the environment, conjuring magic.

The Unfinished Swan was a delightful surprise.  This innovative game is available for download on the PSN Oct 24th.  You use the PS Move to traverse a blank white canvas, painting the environment as you go.  The controls were simple and intuitive.

Sly Cooper 4: Thieves in Time from Sanzaru Games and Sony Entertainment picks up after Sly Cooper 3. It includes a new costume system used to give Sly abilities like additional defence and more.  It’s out Feb. 5th, 2013

Paige and I faced off in Injustice: Gods Among Us.  She as Harley Quinn, me The Flash.  The over-the-top power moves and gameplay was fun for me, but not so much for my 6 year old daughter.  Injustice: Gods Among Us is out in the Spring of 2013

PlayStation All-StarsWe checked out Assassins Creed III and the naval battle mode.  I thought the ship moved well through the water.  This is another title geared more for me.  Check it out yourself on Nov 20th.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royal out Nov 20th provided a ton of fun.  While Paige wanted to exclusively play as Fat Princess, we had the chance to see a few different fighters in play.

As for the PS Vita, we checked out FIFA 13 and Sound Shapes.  I Thought the Vita controls worked well for Sound Shapes especially.

Stay tuned for more from the Sony Holiday Event as we talk with developers from LittleBigPlanet Karting, Skylanders Giants, Book of Magic and PlayStation All-Stars.

PlayStation Holiday event 2012

Yesterday PlayStation Canada hosted there annual Video Game holiday event to showcase new and upcoming titles.

Diving in to the games as soon as we arrived I jumped right into the Navel battle demo of Assassins’ Creed III. While I didn’t get a solid view of the player movement that we have experienced in past AC games I did get to feel how the boat battles will progress. Needless to say Ubisoft got it right with the wide turns, the need to be aware of firing lines and the addition of multiple cannon ball types to make your time at see feel realistic.

Next up I showed off my lame fighting skills, along side @tehflakes, with a close battle between Injustice’s NightWing and Batman. Fantastic graphics and a button mashers dream… I’m kidding… or maybe not… I may not be great at fighting games but this is one I could see myself taking the time to play and really enjoy.

I typically enjoy gaming on a console more than a handheld platform but @tehflakes insisted I try Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified Multi-player on the PS Vita and it was very impressive. I’m glad he pushed me to play it. My beef is not with the game but more so with the Vita’s thumb-sticks and how they work with a fast moving shooter like COD – likely this is my issue having limited time playing the Vita. If you like portable gaming and the COD franchise I’d add this to your wishlist.

Other impressive titles where we didn’t get hands on time at the event include; Lego: Lord of the Rings, Sleeping Dogs, PlayStation Heroes, and Hitman Absolution.

PS3 and PSV owners have a lot of great games to look forward to this season.

First Sony, Now Nintendo

MSNBC is reporting that Nintendo may be the most recent victim in a string of gaming related security threats.

The same group claiming the breaking on the Sony PSN (and other services) has come forward with internal Nintendo server information. The Lulz Security group has stated that they are trying to help Nintendo by pointing out this potential flaw in hopes that they will take action and plug this potential vulnerability. In fact they professed a level of love for older Nintendo consoles and that this hack was just for fun.

While Nintendo claims no ‘third party’ (meaning gamer) data was taken, they did recognize the intrusion and will hopefully begin to address the weak point in their network security.

One final thought… Microsoft are you watching, and learning and adapting… I sure hope so.

PlayStation Canada is having a party…

… and everyone is invited!

Yes that’s right its the 2010 PlayStation Holiday Preview Event party! and does PlayStation have a kick ass line up coming this season. Maybe these will ring a few bells; Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5, SOCOM 4 and LittleBigPlanet 2.

Oh and don’t forget about some of SCEA’s closest friends… What about a few third party titles? See new releases from: Activision, Disney, Konami, EA, Namco, Ubisoft, Warner

This year’s event will take place on October 5 from 5pm to 9pm at the brand-new Sony Centre in downtown Toronto (formerly the old Hummingbird Centre).

Make sure you RSVP if you plan on attending – RSVP to the PlayStation Holiday Preview Event, and please visit our Facebook page for more information.

We’ll see you there.
