Forza 3 Launch

On Thursday October 22nd 2009 car enthusiasts, press and select community members were treated to an evening of on hands on time with Forza 3, a presentation from Korey Krauskopf lead producer and a question and answer period.

Korey’s presentation consisted of talking about some the new features of the game and he said the inspiration for Forza 3 was to turn car lovers into gamers and gamers into car lovers. This was a key phrase we heard a lot that evening.

Key Features:

  • Over 400 Cars
  • Over 100 tracks
  • Rewind
  • My Store Front

Korey also mentioned that we only have split screen co-op in Forza 3 because of the programmers came in on a weekend and spent close to 30 hours to get it to run at 60 frames per second.

He also went on to mention that they will be doing downloadable content for cars but still haven’t decided if they will do DLC for tracks as it’s a very costly process. It can take anywhere from 3-4 months to get a track ready for everyone to play on Xbox Live. As Canada is such a diverse country and Montreal will be back on the F1 circuit next year could we see the Montreal track in Forza 3? Let’s hope.

Review: Halo 3: ODST

New Mombasa is under siege and you are the last hope to save the city, dare I say the entire planet. The bad news, as if the siege wasn’t enough, is that your favourite spartan is not around to save the day… But the good news is your going to get introduced to the next best thing, the 6 man ODST team known as The Squad, humanity’s last chance to save the world.

In typical Halo fashion the story line presented is tight and well written. The voice actors are top notch, and the soundtrack is fantastic. Bungie’s audio director Martin O’Donnell takes players on a musical journey, adding in new Jazz like tracks that effectively setting the mood for whatever your current situation happens to be.

Take to the streets of New Mombosa and battle your way across the streets to find your squad mates, separated during a routine Orbital drop, and complete key objectives to further the goals of the UNSC while working to secure the city. Use stealth to close in on your enemies and your silenced weapons to take them out before they even know your there. Use the buildings and hidden passages to your advantage..Find doorways to hide in, passageways to combat the Brute’s rush and hide form the volley’s of sticky grenades.

A new heads up display providing additional details and visual queues for your character. The new heads-up display takes over and replaces the Spartan radar, and provides a fresh new perspective on your environment. However I found that it made the visual queues stand out and almost to easy to identify – almost giving too much away. Other game-play changes are minimal for fans of Halo; Jumps are not quite as high, shields are managed and need to be repaired by finding “health-like” packs scattered around the cityscape and the Chief’s duel wield that many are familiar with is missing. But what is great about it is the difference is notableness, in a good way, between your ODST and the Spartan we have all come to love. I mean not everyone is cut out to be a Spartan, but the ODSTs are just about ont he level – the best of the second best.

Missions take you from one side of the city to the other and back again, playing different squad members as you progress through the story. Reliving parts of their day as they work to regroup and reach the intended evacuation zone.

Meet the squad:

    * Captain Veronica Dare – (ONI) Office of Naval Intelligence and new Squad leader.
    * Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck – Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and the former leader of the squad.
    * Corporal Taylor “Dutch” Miles – NCO and Heavy Weapons Specialist – with the specialty W/AV M6 Nonlinear Rifle (aka: Spartan Laser).
    * Lance Corporal Kojo “Romeo” Agu – The squad’s sniper.
    * Lance Corporal “Rookie” – This is your character – the new guy.
    * Private First Class Michael “Mickey” Crespo – Explosives and flight specialties.

ODST also arrives with the complete Multi-player Map pack for Halo 3 – so your not completely Spartan free with this purchase. New maps hours of additional game time included on a second disk, what more could you ask for from Bungie – Maybe additional details on REACH?

Pros:

    * Story line and voice acting is as expected; Great! * New Music score with tons of great ambiance * Full disk of Halo 3 Multi-player maps

Cons:

    * story line jumps between characters – time confusion * Headsup display gives away too many secrets

Review: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

For those not in the know or living under a rock, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the very highly anticipated sequel to the 2007 hit Uncharted; Drakes Fortune. While it’s only been 2 years since the 1st game in the series, the people over at Naughty Dog have been toiling day and night to bring us one of the best games available today.

To recap Uncharted: Among Thieves has you in the role of series protagonist Nathan Drake chasing the footsteps of Marco Polo on his quest for the fabled Shangri-La. During his quest, Nathan finds himself in a variety of locales from a museum to a warzone. Helping him along the way is femme fatale Chloe. Chloe is a slick and sexy chick with an attitude – exactly a polar opposite of the original girl next door Elana.

Nothing has seriously deviated from the original because as the old saying goes “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. They have however tightened up the controls a little and added trophies that earn you money to be used in the game for a variety of costumes – the ability to give yourself any weapon at anytime and even some game modifiers (only usable in a difficulty you’ve already completed). I loved this new feature and it actually has me obsessing over the treasure hunt this time around.

Another fantastic addition are the new multi-player modes. You get your typical deathmatches but they’ve added some co-op modes as well. In the Co-op modes, you and 2 other players can either play through some of the scenarios from the single player campaign or survive against hordes of AI player. Personally I love the Gold Rush mode that has you running around trying to take a treasure from point A to point B while being hunted down by wave after wave of bad guys. In addition to the Multi-player modes, as you level up online, you earn money much like the single player campaign that allows you to purchase personal modifiers, player skins and weapon upgrades – Once again I’m obsessing over levelling up online to be able to buy some of these things.

This time around I found the story was even better than the 1st game. I had no issue with the cursed Nazis of the first game because it gives the story a bit of a mystical tone – after all, they are hunting for fabled locations and treasures. I still consider Uncharted:Drake Fortune to be one of the best stories told in a gaming series but Uncharted 2 takes the AAA story telling to new levels of excitement and intrigue.

The graphics and sound engine have even gotten a bit of an upgrade (pay close attention to the snow effects – AMAZING). This game is truly something to behold. It’s hard not to just wander around marvelling at the beauty and detail of this game all the while bullets fly past your head at every turn.

Every couple of years a game comes out that truly defines the current generation of consoles and Uncharted 2 happens to be that title for this generation. What Uncharted 2 does better than anything out there right now is give you a balls to the walls non-stop action game that’s completely satisfying on all fronts. If this isn’t in your PS3 right now, you’re doing yourself and your PS3 a great injustice.

Pros:

  • High Paced Action
  • Great Story
  • Incredible Graphics
  • Amazing Voice Acting
  • Reward System
  • Multiplayer Modes

Cons:

  • The game actually ends
