Microsoft Canada X’09 Roundup

WOW! What a show today from the team over at Microsoft Canada. Putting the Xbox CA community and press in to Gamer paradise. Hosted this year at This is London we were treated to all the latest titles for the upcoming fall season. Here are my Hits and misses:

DJ Hero Hands On – If I had to pick one word to describe this game – Amazing – would be my choice. Clearly the standout winner for me this year. The Turn table controller just feels god in your hand – it’s not over complicated and it was easy to pick up. Two tracks three buttons (right track, center sound effects and the left track), a moving game pad and the left right fade. It just felt comfortable.

Who will love this game? Guitar hero fans and DJs. Best Part… 11 Tracks with Daft Punk as playable characters.

TorontoThumbs Kicking it – DJ table and Guitar

Tony Hawk Ride Hands On – Jump on the board and go. Yeah it’s actually a skate board without wheels. I first hit the time trial and found that unlike riding a bike getting on a skate board (even a fake one) is not like riding a bike. Racing down hill collecting time clock bonuses and penalties. Then is was off to teh half pipe – defiantly better for me than time trials. Rock back and forth on the board and interact with the four sensors to trigger tricks and score bonus points.

Who will love this game? Anyone that loves the Skate culture.

Splinter Cell Conviction Watch – This game looks amazing, even in the early builds that were on display and being run buy the game devs displayed a number of the cool things that make this look like a winner. Hiding in the shadows, using the environment and brute force will be the tools of the trade for this one. Great visuals and cool kills all from the 3rd person POV.

Who will love this game? Stealth and 3rd person shooter fans.

Left 4 Dead 2 Hands On – What more can you say about Left 4 Dead? Great game and L4D2 is no different – new melee weapons and enemies to keep you guessing – more zombies and an AI that will change the difficulty of the game based on your teams performance. This way the game will be more difficult for rockstar teams and easier for the n00bs.

Who will love this game? L4D and horror fans won’t want to miss this – and get over the whole DLC vs a new title debate – this looks to be worth it from my short session behind the gun.

Forza 3 Watch – I’m not much of a racing fan but I was blown away by the graphics on the latest Forza title. Clean, crisp and fast this game will be a winner with many.

Beatles: Rock Band, ODST, and The Ballad of Gay Tony – While these were all present I have had enough hands on and visual time I skipped them all together – great titles all in their own right but not a whole lot new at this point.

Missed: Modern Warfare 2 and Twitter/Facebook integration – These both needed appointments to play and all the times were well booked before I arrived. I’ll be at another event next week and will try to catch MW2 then.

A great event – lots of love from the Xbox Canada Community and the Team at Microsoft Canada… This holiday is going to be a heavy hitter on the pocket books – get ready now.

**A Most Unsexy Update*** At this time the site is down due to the massive demand and they’re working on fixing it. Stay tuned as we plan to post when it’s back up for business.

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up

Did someone say Pizza?

Donnie, Mikey, Leo and Raph are back and they are ready to smash everything in site. But they are not alone this time they have a few new friends tagging along; Zen like Master Splinter, the nosey reporter April O’neil and the urban jock Casey Jones. A number of other classic TMNT characters will also be found through out the game – the Shredder and Foot Clan member Karai will be seen at several points through your story.

From a playability mode this game relies heavily on the strength of the multi-player matches, as the story mode was incredibly short and barely lasted the length of a television episode. Good thing you can play through with all 6 of your primary characters. The controls are simple and the make good use of the Wii mote and the Nunchuk. However The real fun begins with a 4 person battle in a 2D world. Battle your friend locally or take to the Wii network for some online smashing shenanigans. Graphically this game is fairly standard for the Wii. Black and White Cut scenes (shown above) and bright colourful settings for each battle provide a number of great back drops which include multi-tear settings and destructible objects (in some cases the environment is more dangerous than your opponents. Watch out for falling power-ups they are as good for you as they are your your opponents and the AI loves to get them before you can.

Musically this game left me with a feeling of a one SNES title – short music clips that play on rapid repeat, coin counting point totals and the same tag line for each battle, but the actual sound effects of the game are quite good while your actively battling.

Overall I found this to be a very average 2D fighting game, which is actually to bad consider what could have been. Please bring back the old side scrolling TMNT game from 1989, and give it the remake it rightly deserves.

Pros:

    – TMNT fans will appreciate the game – Easy to play and fun for group gaming – Good in battle sound effects

Cos:

    – Voice acting is light and repetitive – Very short short story mode – Single player reply is limited

Feed your Console gives Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up a: 6.5 out of 10.

Left 4 Dead: Crash Course Available but …

This morning the new DLC for Left 4 Dead called Crash Course became available on Xbox live. Only 1 problem: They’re charging too much for it. The DLC is listed as 800MS Points but should only cost 560MS Points. MS is aware of the error and is working to fix – Major Nelson has posted on his Twitter account that the fix may take a few hours to come down the pipelines and to wait before purchasing it.

I really wish I didn’t have school tonight – Looks like I’ll have to play tomorrow. Until then, anyone whose had the chance to play should post their comments so I can live vicariously though you.
***Update*** Some reports are filtering in that it’s completely fixed now but for me it hasn’t changed as of yet. Anyone else?
***Supremely wicked Awesome Update*** The price has been adjusted. Play on folks!

Uncharted 2 Demo to hit PSN Sept 29th

The official Playstation Twitter account just announced that the long awaited Uncharted 2 Demo will be hitting the PSN tomorrow at 11 AM PST (or 2 PM for you East coast people).

@SonyPlayStation For those wondering, the Uncharted 2 demo will go live tomorrow at 11am Pacific. The PS Blog will have more details at that time.

So don’t forget to tune into the PlayStation blog for details.

In other news Uncharted 2 spams twitter with excessive updates – Sony have since disabled this feature to review how to better use the announcement features available when integrating your Gaming experiences and your social networks. I feel this is the right move and that a more conservative updating process is the way to go.

Remember Uncharted 2 Launches Tuesday, October 13.

Appetizers – TGS Edition

Nintendo has finally decided to do the right thing and drop the price on their Wii System. Effective Sunday, the price is dropping to $199.

Nintendo also revealved that “New Super Mario Bros” hits shelves for the Wii on Nov 15, 2009

Ubisoft announced the release date for Splinter Cell: Conviction for Feb 23 on the Xbox 360 and PC.

Microsoft revealed a list of developers that have all jumped onto the Natal Bandwagon (That’s a damn fine looking list if I may say so):

    – Activision Blizzard
    – Bethesda Softworks
    – CAPCOM
    – Disney Interactive
    – Electronic Arts
    – Konami
    – MTV Games
    – Namco Bandai
    – Sega
    – Square Enix
    – THQ Inc.
    – Ubisoft

For those of you getting all ready for the coming of Kratos with the God of War Collectors Edition, Sony announced that the Demo of God of War 3 is included in the package.

That’s a decent sized platter of info – TGS has barely even started. Sounds to me like it could a wild ride.

TGS: Sony’s Live Press Conference Roundup

I’m sitting here trying to round up all the pertinent news from the Sony Press Event at TGS.

Gran Turismo 5 is releasing in March 2010. It boasts over 950 cars, 20 courses, 70 variations, new physics system, damage, moveable objects and the newest Hybrid/electric vehicles.

Sony getting a special edition FInal Fantasy 13 “Lightning Bundle Edition”. It’s white with a red lighning drawing on the side with a 250GB HDD. Further to that Final Fantasy 8 is to be available today on PSN

Resident Evil 5 is getting the Sony Motion Controller treatment – titled “Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition”. It will come with a bonus disc featuring extra content that’s been requested by gamers. The game hits this Spring. (Apparently they use a motion controller in one had and the DS3 in the other – Sounds akward to me.)

LittleBigPlanet is getting the motion treatment too.

“Room for PlayStation Portable” – Similar to Home. Closed Beta to start soon and hopefully an open beta later in the year.

Movies, Anime and TV Shows will hit the Japanese stores in November, Comic Service is still PSP Only.

Not too much really to report here – some new details on a few things but nothing that made me sit back and say “WOW”….I did say “WTF” in respect to the motion controller and still using the Dual Shock 3 Controller – I just can’t see how that could be comfortable.

EDIT – Came across an image of the Sony Motion Controller.

Borderlands Delayed for PC Gamers

Word on the street today is that the PC edition of Borderlands, originally slated to hit stores Oct 20 is being bumped by just a few short days to Oct 26 to allow for some extra optimization that’s taking a little longer than previously thought. Our contact have confirmed that this is a fact. Xbox 360 and PS3 users need not worry as it doesn’t affect them.

Left 4 Dead 2 – Demo on the way

It was revealed today at TGS that the Left 4 Dead 2 Demo hits Xbox 360 and PC users October 27th. Seriously I think the excitement is hitting a feverish pitch over that game. I think it should be sooner but I’m not the man in charge.
